I went on my first writing workshop in November 2014. Since then, I have attended over a dozen workshops, several conferences and festivals and numerous seminars and writer talks in Australia and internationally. I’ve read countless articles, several books, and taken three semester long classes to develop my craft and write and rewrite and rewrite and polish my work.
At the time of writing this I am an unpublished writer with one novel length manuscript ready to submit, another in early development that will be turned inside out and upside down before I would call it a first-draft, and a series of interlinked vignettes that need further work to reach their philosophical potential.
I am far from an expert, but I have learnt a lot. Perhaps the most useful thing I have learnt is that writing is different for every writer, and most writers say it is different for every story. Everyone comes to writing with their own internal motivations and drives. For me, it is an artistic pursuit. I am striving to be in service of the story. So, while the tips and resources outlined in these pages have all been useful for me, I would recommend you just add them to the pick and mix of what is out there to find what works for you.
I’ve also found there were different things I needed to learn and discover at different stages of writing. Again, this will be different for every writer, but I’ve broken down these tips into what I found, or would have liked to have known at the various stages of the journey.
